Head of Mexico telecom regulator steps down

MEXICO CITY, June 23 (Reuters) - The head of Mexico’s telecom regulator Cofetel said on Wednesday he would leave the commission when his term ends this month.

Hector Osuna said he was leaving Cofetel, which has struggled to modernize Mexico’s telecom industry and reduce the dominance of tycoon Carlos Slim’s Telmex TELMEXL.MX TMX.N and America Movil (AMXL.MX) (AMX.N), to pursue political interests in northern Mexico.

After years of delay, the commission is currently overseeing the auction of additional wireless spectrum with America Movil, Spain’s Telefonica (TEF.MC) and Nextel Mexico participating. (Reporting by Noel Randewich, editing by Matthew Lewis)
