FACTBOX-Sen. Craig resigns amid sex scandal
(Reuters) - Long-serving Republican Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho, embroiled in a sex scandal and lacking support from his party, announced his resignation on Saturday.
Following are some facts about Craig.
* Craig pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct after his arrest in June in an undercover operation at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, where police were targeting lewd behavior in the men's bathroom.
* Craig said on August 28 he was not gay and had made a mistake in pleading guilty to the misdemeanor charge. Craig said he had acted hastily because of what he called a "witch hunt" by the Idaho Statesman newspaper, which for months has been investigating rumors about his personal life focusing on allegations he had had sexual encounters with men.
* In June 2006, Craig voted in favor of an amendment to the Constitution to define marriage in the United States as a union between one man and one woman. The amendment was defeated by one vote in the Senate.
* In February 1999, Craig voted to impeach former President Bill Clinton after his sex scandal involving a White House intern. Craig called it "an appropriate response, a necessary response, a constitutionally compelled response," but the impeachment articles did not get the necessary two-thirds majority.
* Throughout his Senate career, Craig was an advocate for gun owners. He also was active on land-ownership issues important to western states like Idaho, where the federal government owns vast areas of land.
* Craig, 62, was elected to the Senate in 1990.
