CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Mississippi River has flowed over the top of a levee north of St. Louis protecting an environmental management area, bringing the total number of compromised levees to 23, said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Thursday.

The levee, near the convergence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, protected about 4,000 acres.

The compromised levees stretch from Dubuque, Iowa, to St. Louis and another two dozen levees are at risk of being swamped by flood waters, the Corps of Engineers said.
