FACTBOX-Five facts about Canada's energy powerhouse Alberta
March 3 (Reuters) - Alberta's Conservative Party won an 11th straight majority victory in Monday's general election, extending a rule that began in the Western Canadian province in 1971.
Here are five facts about Alberta, Canada's energy powerhouse.
-- Alberta, which comprises flat prairies as well as part of the snow-capped Canadian Rockies, has a population of 3.3 million, or about 10 percent of the Canadian total.
-- Alberta's GDP was C$183 billion ($185 billion) in 2006, or about 14 percent of Canadian GDP.
-- Oil and gas production accounts for about 25 percent of Alberta's gross domestic product, 70 percent of provincial exports and more than a third of provincial government revenues. Its oil sands contain 174 billion barrels of oil, the largest reserves outside the Middle East. Other key industries include agriculture, forestry and tourism.
-- Alberta has the strongest economy among Canada's 10 provinces and is the only jurisdiction that is debt free. The province has run budget surpluses for 14 years, thanks to spending restraints and windfall royalty payments from the oil and gas sector.
-- Alberta claims to have been free of rats since 1950, when the province established a control program. The province still employs inspectors to patrol its borders and inspect up to 4,000 buildings a year for signs of infestation. Pet rats are banned.
