Adlington broke swimming's oldest world record - American Janet Evans's 1989 mark - to win the women's 800 metres freestyle. It was her second gold in a week after winning Britain's first Olympic women's swimming title in nearly half a century in the 400 freestyle on Monday.
As a 15-year-old she was invited to attend Britain's holding camp ahead of the 2004 Olympics to gain experience and act as Rebecca Cooke's training partner.
