NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. administration has put together a short list of candidates to fill openings at the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site on Friday.

The White House is looking for candidates to succeed Republican commissioner Paul Atkins after his term expires this summer, the Journal reported, citing unnamed sources. Atkins is expected to not seek renomination, the paper said.

The Journal said among people being considered were three lawyers -- Douglas Cox and Steven Guynn of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, and Stuart Kaswell of Dechert -- and Troy Paredes, a law professor at Washington University in St. Louis.

The candidates and the SEC could not be reached immediately for comment.
