(Reuters) - The energy bill under debate in the U.S. House on Tuesday would extend the $1-a-gallon tax credit for biodiesel fuel for one year.

According to congressional staffers, the major items in the energy bill that apply to biofuels were:

-- Extending of the $1 a gallon biodiesel tax credit and the small biodiesel-producer credit of 10 cents a gallon for one year, to December 31, 2009.

-- Making the biodiesel credit available for fuel created from biomass without regard to the process. Diesel fuel created by co-processing biomass with other feedstocks, such as petroleum, will be eligible for 50-cent a gallon credit for alternative fuels.

-- Increasing the alternative refueling property credit to 50 percent, or maximum $50,000, for businesses that install alternative-fuel pumps and extending the credit through 2010. The credit now is 30 percent with a maximum of $30,000. The cap on alternative refueling property credit for individuals would be doubled to $2,000 and the credit would be available through 2017 for natural gas home refueling pumps.

-- Treating income from transportation through pipelines or storage of certain alternative fuels, such as ethanol, the same as income from transportation of oil and gas through pipelines.
