INSTANT VIEW: Clinton, McCain win New Hampshire primaries
MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) - Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton and Republican Sen. John McCain won their parties' primaries in New Hampshire on Tuesday, the second high-profile battleground in the state-by-state contests to choose candidates for the November U.S. presidential election, U.S. media reported.
The following is some reaction.
CLINTON ADVISER AND FORMER DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE
CHAIRMAN TERRY MCAULIFFE
"This is a big big win for us. It's now a one-on-one race. It's Hillary Clinton vs Barack Obama. We've got 25 more states to go."
MARK MCKINNON, SENIOR ADVISER TO MCCAIN (on Fox)
"It's definitely a comeback story. He (McCain) came back from the dead. Everybody counted him out, said there was no way he could come back. And he was determined and he did it through sheer guts and a rag tag band of loyal followers. We did it with spit and glue, no money. But just it was John McCain's character, it was his truth telling, it was his honesty, it was his conviction that brought him back here in New Hampshire."
JOHN MCCARTHY, MANAGER OF CURRENCY TRADING AT ING CAPITAL
MARKETS IN NEW YORK
"It's very early in the election round to draw any significant conclusions. I honestly think as we go through the primary process you're not going to see much of a reaction in the financial markets until you see who the Democratic and Republican nominees are going to be ... Measuring the changes that are going to come about in the markets is still a long way off."
MARK WAGGONER, PRESIDENT, EXCEL FUTURES INC
"It's anybody's race right now. I was surprised that Mitt (Romney) didn't do better ... (McCain) is going to have a tough time with Mitt in Michigan, and (South) Carolina is coming right up. Mitt's got a lot of money and if he wins in Michigan he's back in the race."
RON SIMPSON, DIRECTOR OF CURRENCY RESEARCH AT ACTION
ECONOMICS, TAMPA, FLORIDA
"I don't think there's any market impact at this stage. Especially on the Republican side it's still wide open. My personal opinion is that Huckabee's win in Iowa was a one-and-done. I think it's going to be between Romney, McCain, and we'll see what the dark horse Giuliani can do when the big states come along."
"I think probably this will put McCain as the near term front-runner ... I think Florida is going to be a key state for both Democrats and Republicans in this primary season." Continued...
