WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Jeanne Shaheen won the U.S. Senate race in New Hampshire on Tuesday, unseating Republican incumbent Sen. John Sununu, a significant victory for Democrats in their bid to widen their control of Congress, NBC projected.

The former New Hampshire governor was declared the winner in her rematch against Sununu, who successfully ran against her in 2002. Democrats had targeted the race in this Northeastern state as a possible pickup in their efforts to expand their Senate majority.
