Honduras Conference to Draw Over 200 Delegates
WASHINGTON, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- projecthonduras.com announced that the 10th annual Conference on Honduras in Copan Ruinas, Honduras will attract over 200 people from more than 100 organizations involved in humanitarian and volunteer work in the country, including international non-profits, medical brigades, churches, civic clubs, universities, companies, and agencies. The event on September 24-26, 2009 will draw representatives from several Rotary Club chapters, Episcopal dioceses and other faith-based organizations, as well as USAID and universities such as Dartmouth, Northern Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Southeastern Louisiana. "We are on pace to have about the same number of conferees we normally have despite the recent political events involving ousted president Manuel Zelaya," said projecthonduras.com co-founder Marco Caceres. "I think the kind of people who usually attend each year have a good understanding of the situation on the ground in Honduras, and they feel confident that things are relatively calm and stable." The conference is the premier networking event for those working on grassroots development projects in Honduras in the areas of education, healthcare, clean water, caring for orphans, HIV/AIDS, micro-credit, alternative energy, and sustainability. In the past decade, it has attracted more than 1,000 people from Honduras, Australia, Canada, Europe, Mexico, New Zealand, and nearly every state in the U.S. The goal is to network and exchange information so that there can be more coordination. "There are tens of thousands of volunteers from thousands of groups who are quietly empowering the Honduran people," noted Caceres. "We have many innovative models for effectively dealing with the kind of social and economic problems that keep three-quarters of Honduras' population in poverty. The conference, along with our online network, is designed to get individuals to share what they have learned and encourage them to partner with each other. The Conference on Honduras represents the third part of a three-step strategy for creating an alternative development model for nations based on information and communications technologies (ICT). The first part was the creation of the projecthonduras.com website, which serves as a clearinghouse of information about Honduras. The second part was the creation of online forums, including social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter, to allow people to communicate easily. The Conference on Honduras 2009 (http://projecthonduras.com/conference) will be presented by projecthonduras.com and sponsored by Special Missions Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit.
