Canadians Take Advantage of the Perfect Storm
TORONTO, Feb 04 (MARKET WIRE) --
A slumping U.S. housing market and a strong Canadian dollar combine to create a
historic opportunity for Canadians considering a second home purchase south of
the
border. The issue for Canadians, though, is making it happen -- the right way.
Dealing with a different financial system can leave many Canadians
scratching their
heads or even wondering where to start. And like any investment, it pays to
do your homework, especially around the tax and legal implications of owning
U.S. property. Two financial experts are attempting to make that homework
easy with a free seminar series in four Canadian cities: Toronto, Ottawa,
Vancouver, and Winnipeg (see dates and locations below).
Terry Ritchie, a Certified Financial Planner who splits his time between
Calgary
and Phoenix, Arizona, is the author of "The Canadian Snowbird in America -
Professional Tax and Financial Insights into Temporary Lifestyles in the U.S."
He
will focus on giving seminar participants practical advice on tax filing in both
countries, how to hold title on U.S. property, and estate-planning tips. His
books will also be available for purchase at the event.
Mark Dziedzic, a former Financial Planner from Toronto and owner of
Arizonafor Canadians, will run through the buying process, with a concentration
onthe differences between the two systems, and the various financing options
available to Canadians. He will also look at specific opportunities by
reviewing the market in Phoenix and Scottsdale and how it has been
impactedby the sub-prime mortgage crisis.
Arizona, always one of the United States' strongest appreciating real estate
markets, has seen increasing for-sale inventories, sliding housing prices, and
special buyer incentives. As a result, an increasing number of Canadians are
choosing Arizona as their destination of choice for investment and
recreational properties. In comparison, other Sunbelt States like California,
and especially Florida, have seen soaring property tax and home insurance
costs. This means that Mark Dziedzic, whose only focus is helping other
Canadians with their home-buying needs in Arizona, is busier than ever. "Half of
the buyers of all of the homes in Phoenix and Scottsdale are now Canadian."
