- Against Backdrop of JAMA Report on Post-Diagnosis Joblessness, Legal and
Medical Experts Share Real-Life Solutions for Working Through Cancer -

DALLAS, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Cancer and Careers, along with its founding
partner Roche, has joined forces with Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC), the
Young Survival Coalition (YSC) and Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R) to present
their educational workshop, "Managing Cancer and Careers," at the 9th Annual
Conference for Young Women Affected by Breast Cancer.

This marks the first time the popular program - successfully introduced to
hundreds of cancer survivors and caregivers last year as the "Balancing Cancer
and Careers" seminar in several cities across the United States - will be
offered at a national advocacy conference. The Managing Cancer and Careers
Workshop will take place from 4:30-6 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 27 at the Hilton
Anatole in Dallas, Texas. Conference registration is required.

"Many young people not only want to - but need to - return to work following a
cancer diagnosis or treatment, especially in today's economic climate," said
Carlotta Jacobson, former beauty editor of Harper's Bazaar and current
president of Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW), who founded Cancer and Careers
when she learned that five CEW board members were diagnosed with cancer and
struggled to find resources to help them balance their careers while
undergoing treatment. "These women not only need the income and insurance, but
also benefit from the sense of normalcy their jobs provide. This workshop
offers real-life solutions that will help young career women continue to work
successfully through breast cancer."

An analysis of previous studies published in the Feb. 18 issue of TheJournal
of the American Medical Association showed that cancer survivors in the United
States and Europe have a significantly higher risk of joblessness than their
healthy counterparts - especially survivors of breast and gastrointestinal
cancers. The authors state that innovations in treatment, clinical and
supportive services and workplace interventions can all help improve
employment outcomes.

The Managing Cancer and Careers Workshop is uniquely suited to help women
address this issue by providing practical solutions on how to navigate the
unique challenges of cancer in the workplace. Experts will discuss topics such
as how to create an action plan that includes if/how to address colleagues;
how to inquire about effective treatments, including oral chemotherapies such
as Xeloda(R)(i), that may allow more flexibility and convenience; and what
cancer patients need to know about their legal rights in the workplace,
including an updated Congressional bill that expands the definition of
disability.

"Part of an oncologist's job is to work with patients to identify treatment
regimens that allow them to live their lives as normally as possible," said
Debu Tripathy, M.D., president and chief executive officer, Physicians'
Education Resource. "Some breast cancer treatments, such as oral
chemotherapies and accelerated radiation therapy, allow young women to spend
less time at the hospital receiving treatment and more time working or
enjoying life with friends and family."

In addition to Dr. Tripathy, workshop panel experts will include Cancer and
Careers Executive Director Kate Sweeney and Cancer Legal Resource Center
Director Joanna Morales, Esq. Women will also receive information on national
resources that can help them adjust to working through breast cancer.

"One topic our conference attendees have consistently asked us to address over
the years is working through cancer diagnosis or treatment," said Marcia
Stein, chief executive officer, Young Survival Coalition and moderator of the
workshop. "Young women with breast cancer are in the beginning stages of their
career and a cancer diagnosis is derailing. We're thrilled for the opportunity
to work with Cancer and Careers and Roche to bring this important subject
matter to patients who want and need more information."

To attend the workshop, you must register for the 9th Annual Conference for
