Moores UCSD Cancer Center Luau and Longboard Invitational Hosts Survivor Beach

Attendees will attempt to break record for longest line of surfboards, showing
support of cancer survivors and research for a cure

LA JOLLA, Calif., July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Surfers, cancer survivors and
supporters will gather on Sunday, August 9 on the shore of the Pacific Ocean
with a special purpose: to show their support for the fight against cancer.
As participants in the third annual Survivor Beach, they will place their
surfboards in the sand, one-by-one, nose-to-tail, with the goal of forming the
world's longest line of surfboards. The line will start at Scripps Pier and
continue down La Jolla Shores beach. Survivor Beach was established in 2007
to bring members of the community together to create a symbol of support for
cancer research and for the survivors and others who have been affected by the
disease. The event will take place from 8-11 a.m. and is hosted by the Moores
UCSD Cancer Center as a precursor to its 16th annual Luau and Longboard
Invitational.

"Survivor Beach is a powerful symbol of the community's commitment to
supporting the quest for a cure for cancer," said Dennis Carson, MD, director
of the Moores UCSD Cancer Center.

Last year, more than 200 people joined the event to create a line of record
length. "Since the founding of Survivor Beach, we have seen a tremendous
response," said Jessica Yingling, this year's co-chair of the Luau and
Longboard Invitational. "The impressive turnout is a testament to the
community's deep support for cancer research and willingness to join in making
a stand in the fight against cancer."

According to the American Cancer Society, advancements in early detection and
new treatments over the past decade have reduced the annual number of deaths
from cancer by 16 percent. However, cancer remains the second leading cause
of death in the United States and one in three will have cancer at some point
in their lives. That is why it is important to continue to support further
research into the disease, prevention and potential treatments.

public. Participants will receive a free souvenir and will be registered to
win a pair of tickets to the 16th annual Moores UCSD Cancer Center Luau &
Longboard Invitational. The person who brings the most surfboards will
