Henkel's successful use of Denison tools since 2002 is focus of case study
published by German foundation

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Reflecting the global reach of
Denison Consulting, the firm has played a major role in improving the
organizational culture and business performance of Henkel, a multinational
company with headquarters in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Denison's work for Henkel is the focus of an in-depth case study that has
been released by the International Network Corporate Culture. Entitled
"Managing Culture at Henkel: Applying the Denison Organizational Culture
Survey," the case study was written collaboratively by Rolf Schlue, corporate
vice president of Global Human Resources for Henkel, and Daniel Denison,
founding partner of Denison Consulting. Denison also serves at IMD (Institute
for Management Development) in Lausanne, Switzerland as professor of
Management and Organization.
Henkel is a Fortune Global 500 company with more than 52,000 employees
worldwide. It is a leader in three strategic business areas: home care
products; personal care products; and adhesives, sealants and surface
treatment products.
The International Network Corporate Culture, founded in 2003, is a group
of 11 European-based, multinational companies. These firms exchange
information and best practices relating to corporate culture among
participating firms, and also aim to develop, publish and disseminate studies
and other materials on corporate culture best practices.
Bertelsmann Stiftung, a foundation based in Germany, published the case
study. It serves as both a private "think tank" and a catalyst for social
change, and currently is involved in more than 600 different projects.
The case study is available for download at the Denison Consulting Web
site at: http://www.denisonconsulting.com/dc/Default.aspx?tabid=112.

are employee surveys, including the Denison Organizational Culture Survey and
the Denison Leadership Development Survey.
In a recent enhancement of its international capabilities, Denison formed
an alliance with Thomas Landschof, global strategy consultant for Strategic
Networks and Strategic Networking, based in Hamburg, Germany. Daniel Denison
and Thomas Landschof have begun working together to serve clients in Germany,

Case study profiles culture change initiative
The case study provides an overview of Henkel and its long-established
corporate culture. More than five years ago, Henkel officials decided to use
the Denison Organizational Culture Survey, in an initiative that was deployed
company-wide to improve organizational culture and boost business performance.
In their article, the authors profile a series of employee surveys that
were conducted at Henkel starting in 2002 -- with a look at results, and
management actions that were taken based on survey data.
"By using our survey tools over the years, Henkel has been able to track
the evolution of its employees and organization, and develop and implement
effective strategies for change," said Denison.
Project leader cites high value of Denison survey
The case study includes an introduction written jointly by Ulrich Lehner,
chairman and chief executive officer of Henkel, and Liz Mohn, vice president
of the executive board, and member of the board of trustees of Bertelsmann
Stiftung.
Gabriele Schoeler, project manager -- Competence Center Corporate
Culture/Leadership for Bertelsmann Stiftung, prepared the preface for the case
study, in which she writes: "Henkel considers its decision to apply the
Denison Organizational Culture Survey a major success in itself ...
Expectations and objectives were fully met; not only did the work yield a
clearer picture of the Henkel culture as it was perceived and lived in the
company over the five years under investigation, but it also provided highly
relevant insight into required changes and amendments."

focus, and organizational learning (all part of adaptability); strategic
direction and intent, goals and objectives, and vision (mission); empowerment,
team orientation, and capability development (involvement); and core values,
agreement, and coordination and integration (consistency).
