Baker`s Beranek Inducted into HQUSACE Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees
ALEXANDRIA, Va.--(Business Wire)-- Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation (NYSE Amex:BKR), announced that Dwight A. Beranek, P.E., CFM, senior vice president and market service manager for Baker`s Department of Defense (DoD) programs, has been inducted into Headquarters U.S. Army Corps of Engineers` Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees, considered one of the most prestigious honors bestowed on civilian employees. LTG Robert VanAntwerp, USACE Commander, presented Beranek with the honor on June 30, 2009, in Washington, D.C. Beranek served in Headquarters U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (HQUSACE) for two tours from November 1987 through February 1996 and from August 1998 through February 2006. Through his leadership in these time frames, he helped the Corps establish energy performance for new and existing buildings, helped establish the Office of the Chief of Engineers (Pentagon) as its first Deputy Director, and led Military Programs strategic and business planning initiatives as Assistant Director of Military Programs. In 1998, Beranek was appointed first as Chief of Engineering and Construction for Military Programs and later organized the new military and civil works joint Engineering and Construction Division. After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, he led the formation of The Infrastructure Security Partnership (TISP) serving as its founding Chair. He was promoted in 2002 to Deputy Director of Military Programs HQUSACE and served in that capacity until his retirement in 2006 after a total of 38 years of federal service in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. General VanAntwerp said, "Dwight has made long-lasting contributions to the Corps of Engineers and exemplifies the qualities of leadership at the highest levels." Beranek is the recipient of several prestigious service awards including: Presidential Rank Meritorious Executive: Senior Executive Service (1999); Secretary of the Army Exceptional Civilian Service Award (2006); Army Engineer Association DeFluery Medal, Silver (2006); American Society of Civil Engineers President`s Medal (2003); Society of American Military Engineers Presidents Medal (2001) and Fellow; and Honorary Awards from Black Engineer of the Year Awards Corporation (BEYAC), Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corporation (HENAAC), and American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Mr. Beranek holds a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University, as well as Master's Degrees in Business Administration and Public Administration from Boston University and American University, respectively. He is a registered professional engineer in Nebraska and a Certified Flood Plain Manager. Beranek is a member of a number of professional societies, including the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the Industry Advisory Council for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
