The inaugural FIRST Lego League qualifier in the District of Columbia marks
the first time D.C. schools participate in a Lego League of their own, without
having to compete for space at venues in Maryland or Virginia. Those two
states' schools, meanwhile, now have an additional opportunity to compete, as
the D.C. venue is open to them as well. The strength of FIRST is involving
students in science and technology to solve real world challenges, with the
ultimate aim of interesting more American youth in scientific fields.

Nearly a million young people have participated in FIRST programs since 1989,
with tens of thousands of youth continuing their interests into the science
and technology fields.

Booz Allen has been involved with FIRST for a number of years, beginning with
individual efforts of staff that Booz Allen supported in separate efforts
spread out across the country. Upon realizing the extent and commitment of
the separate efforts, Booz Allen elevated its sponsorship as a Primary
Education Partnership in 2007. Between 2008 and 2009, in the spirit of
concentrating our involvement and aligning resources to staff participation
and interest, Booz Allen provided funds and mentorships across the nation,
helping support 20 FIRST Lego Leagues and 20 FIRST Robotics Competitions.
