WHO: Robert Gates is the 22nd U.S. Secretary of Defense. He was
appointed by President Bush in 2006 and was asked by
President Obama to continue serving in that position, the
first time in the department's history that has ever
happened. He is also the first entry-level CIA employee to
rise through the ranks to become Director of Central
Intelligence. Along the way, he earned his doctorate in
Russian and Soviet History from Georgetown University.
Throughout more than three decades in government, Dr. Gates
has served 8 presidents.
