St. Baldrick`s Foundation Announces Grants Totaling More Than $650,000
Grants will help make a difference for pediatric cancer patients in communities nationwide PASADENA, Calif.--(Business Wire)-- The St. Baldrick`s Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, announced today that it awarded more than $650,000 in fall 2009 infrastructure grants. Infrastructure grants provide institutions with resources to make more research possible and treat more kids on clinical trials, their best hope for a cure. These recent grants, combined with the $11.5 million awarded in June for other research, bring the total of support in 2009 to more than $12 million. With only three percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick`s grant awards are critical to continue the battle against this devastating disease. Worldwide, 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year and cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children in the United States. "Each day, families of kids with cancer tell us a cure is not enough. These grants will not only help save lives, but will improve the quality of life for patients and survivors," said Kathleen Ruddy, executive director for the St. Baldrick`s Foundation. "While people have been hit hard during the recession, St. Baldrick`s supporters have continued to passionately support our fight against childhood cancer and to improve the quality of life for patients and survivors." St. Baldrick`s infrastructure grants were funded at the following: * Albany Medical College, Albany, N.Y. * American Society of Pediatric Hematology Oncology (ASPHO) * Children`s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases of Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Nev. * Children`s Hospital Central California, Madera, Calif. * Children`s Hospital of The King`s Daughters, Norfolk, Va. * Greenville Hospital System, Greenville, S.C. * Jonathan Jaques Children`s Cancer Center at the Miller Children`s Hospital, Long Beach, Calif. * Riley Children`s Foundation, Indianapolis, Ind. * Tulane University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, La. * University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, Ill. * Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children`s Cancer Clinic, McAllen, Texas * Yale University, New Haven, Conn. Since 2000, St. Baldrick`s has been on a mission of Shaving the Way to Conquer Kids` Cancer, raising more than $68 million for childhood cancer research through festive head-shaving events worldwide. Grant applications were reviewed based on the need of the institution and the anticipated results of the grant. Institutions were also considered based on the level of participation of the local community in St. Baldrick`s events. Everyone can do their part to support St. Baldrick`s.
