Treasury Secretary Geithner to Headline Bipartisan Policy Center's Financial Regulatory Roundtable Capital Markets Subcommittee Chairman Kanjorski and Ranking Member Garrett host forum to discuss Obama Administration's financial regulatory plan WASHINGTON, July 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Chairman Paul E. Kanjorski (D-PA) and Ranking Member Scott Garrett (R-NJ) of the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance, and Government Sponsored Enterprises, announced today that they will host an educational roundtable on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 with guest speaker, Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner. This is the fifth roundtable presented by the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) intended as an interactive, bipartisan forum for members of the Subcommittee to examine causes of the current U.S. financial crisis and discuss possible reforms. "Our past roundtables have provided valuable resources for Subcommittee Members to openly discuss relevant financial services issues and gain insight from our guest speakers," said Chairman Kanjorski. "We are especially pleased that Secretary Geithner is taking the time to meet with us in light of the Administration's recent announcement of its proposals for regulatory reform. By spending an evening with us, he will help Members understand the Administration's perspective on these issues and allow the Treasury Secretary to explain his thoughts on specific aspects of the proposal." "Although Secretary Geithner and I hold differing opinions on many issues, I look forward to the opportunity to get his insight on a variety of issues relating to financial services regulatory reform," said Representative Garrett. "The off-the-record, roundtable format is a refreshing alternative to that of the hearing room, and I know my colleagues and I will benefit from friendly and frank discussion that will take place." Secretary Geithner was sworn in as the 75th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Treasury in January 2009. Previously, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Secretary Geithner first joined the Department of Treasury in 1988, and has worked in three administrations for five Secretaries in a variety of positions. Earlier he was director of the Policy Development and Review Department at the International Monetary Fund. Before joining Treasury, Secretary Geithner worked for Kissinger Associates, Inc. The BPC plans to sponsor additional financial roundtables in the coming weeks, which will examine select topics under the Subcommittee's jurisdiction, with presentations from well-known experts from the public and private sectors. All roundtables are for members only and will be closed to the public and the press. The BPC was founded in 2007 by former Senate Majority Leaders Howard Baker, Tom Daschle, Bob Dole and George Mitchell to develop and promote bipartisan solutions to the nation's most pressing public policy challenges. The BPC currently conducts projects in the areas of transportation, health care, energy and climate change, national and homeland security, and science.
