Back to School Basketball Jam Camp to Help Albuquerque Youth Step Up Their Game
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--(Business Wire)-- The Kenny Thomas Foundation Back to School Basketball Jam Camp will be held Monday, August 17 through Wednesday, August 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Open to students in the entire area, the camp will remain at its adopted 2009-2010 high school, Highland High School, 4700 Coal Ave., S.E., Albuquerque, NM 87108. The camp, previously scheduled for July 6 through July 8, was moved to accommodate the schedule of the featured celebrity entertainment, customarily a draw of Thomas` youth events. "The kids are going to have a great time while learning basketball fundamentals from me," said Kenny Thomas, forward with the Sacramento Kings and former University of New Mexico basketball standout. "As is customary with most of our events, we will bring in entertainment for the big camp finale and to celebrate the start of school." "We are excited to host the basketball camp and to be selected as a beneficiary of the Kenny Thomas Foundation Education Initiative," said Highland High School Principal Nicolette C. Dennis. "Kenny will help us fund a tutoring program and offer our youth scholarship opportunities. It`s great that Kenny is giving back to the community in this way." The Kenny Thomas Foundation was founded in October 2007 to establish goodwill in its founder`s hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, as well as other cities where Thomas has lived. An alumnus of Albuquerque High School, Thomas furthered his education at the University of New Mexico (UNM) where he was a member of the UNM Men's Basketball (Lobos) Team, and presently ranks second on the Lobos' all-time scoring list. The Kenny Thomas Foundation seeks to implement tools to improve the youth success rate. The Foundation aims to accomplish this goal through college scholarships awarded to graduating college-bound seniors, and its Education Initiative programs. In July 2008, two Albuquerque High School students were each awarded a $6,000 college scholarship. The camp also will incorporate "Hoops-n-Scoop" enrichment sessions. Here the youth will chat with respected leaders and question college administrators about post-high-school education. School supplies and other giveaways will be provided. Interested parents and guardians can register youth online at www.kennythomas.net. The cost per camper is $100. No additional funds are required from campers who previously registered during the early bird period.
