Secretary Zahorchak Commends Education Leaders, State Board of Education on
High School Graduation Requirements Announcement

HARRISBURG, Pa., July 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Education Secretary Gerald
L. Zahorchak today issued the following statement regarding a new agreement on
stronger high school graduation requirements:

"Today's announcement represents significant progress in ensuring that every
Pennsylvania high school student graduates with the skills they need to
succeed in college and the workforce. Strengthening our graduation
requirements is a powerful response to the business leaders, educators and
parents who have called on state policy-makers to ensure that a high school
diploma is truly a ticket to success in the real world.

"I want to thank the education stakeholders, the State Board of Education and
its chairman, Joe Torsella, for their hard work over many months in forging a
consensus on how to improve Pennsylvania's high school graduation requirements
to meet the needs of our high-skills, global economy. The contributions of the
State Board of Education, school boards, teachers, principals and
superintendents have been invaluable in advancing this critical issue.

"The Department of Education looks forward to reviewing the proposed
regulation that follows today's announcement. Members of the General Assembly
have made clear that they expect any regulation to have legislative buy-in,
and thanks to the extensive efforts of our legislators, education leaders and
State Board of Education, I am hopeful that this proposal will be viewed
positively as it proceeds through the regulatory process."
