QBlack Media Makes a Deviant Move
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- QBlack Media, a real estate and new
media investment fund based in San Francisco, led by Joe Q. Bretz, David
Blackford, and Chris Luu, has partnered with established independent feature
film production company Deviant Films (The Last Word, Big Stan, Dead Birds,
London, Dirty). Founded in 2003 by former Muse Productions development and
production heads David Hillary and Tim Peternel (Muse credits also include
Spun, This Girl's Life, and American Psycho), Deviant will join QBlack to form
a new production company, QBlack Deviant.
QBlack will provide funding for projects vetted by the collaborative
partnership. The new venture will encompass the development, funding, and
execution of independent films in the 2 to 20 million-dollar range as well as
reality show pilots and webisodic entertainment.
Of the emerging partnership, Bretz has said, "I truly admire Tim and
David's work ethic and past projects-films like Spun, Last Word, London, and
American Psycho are favorites of mine. QBlack is growing at such a rapid
rate, we need to partner with someone who can get things done. It's a great
match."
Both QBlack Media and Deviant Films view their collaboration as a way to
make independent productions viable. Says Hillary, "There is a way for
independently funded films to thrive in any economic climate. In the past,
we've figured out how to make great projects on a shoe string budget.
Partnering with QBlack allows us more creative freedom to pursue passion
projects and the ability to bring them in on time and on budget."
Tim Peternel had these comments on forming the new entity, "QBlack has
shown they believe in funding projects from concept to completion. The new
company will remain open to packaged projects that make economic and creative
sense. I look forward to working with such a forward-thinking, progressive
company."
Deviant Films' first collaboration with QBlack Media is THE CHOSEN ONE,
starring Rob Schneider, Steve Buscemi, and Peter Riegert, a film about an
ancient South American Indian tribe who believes Rob's character, an alcoholic
used car salesman, is their savior.
QBlack Deviant's next two films will be AMSTERDAM and SMALL APARTMENTS,
scheduled to shoot in fall 2008. Sean Faris is attached to star in AMSTERDAM.
Additionally, QBlack Deviant has optioned the critically acclaimed novel PAINT
IT BLACK by Janet Fitch (White Oleander).
