WHEN: Sunday, May 4, 2008 at 5:00 p.m.
WHERE: Fairmont Copley Plaza in the Oval Room
138 Saint James Avenue
Boston, MA 02116
WHAT: Free Wheelchair Mission is hosting a "Magic of Mobility"
Fundraising Dinner as part of its nationwide tour to
benefit more than 100 million disabled people around the
world.
-- Nicolai Calabria, the 13-year old Boston boy with only
one leg who climbed to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, will
receive the 2008 Inaugural "Ability through Mobility"
Junior Award.
-- Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, who Nicolai will meet for the
first time, will present the award to Nicolai. Emmanuel
is Nicolai's hero and the focus of the documentary
movie, "Emmanuel's Gift." Narrated by Oprah Winfrey, the
film tells the story of how Emmanuel cycled across his
homeland of Ghana using only his left leg to change
perceptions about people with disabilities.
-- Nicolai climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise money for Free
Wheelchair Mission after being inspired by the
documentary film "Emmanuel's Gift."
-- Don Schoendorfer, founder of Free Wheelchair Mission and
2008 recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor
Society's Above and Beyond award, will give a special
presentation. All monies donated will be used to change
the lives of those with disabilities in both Ghana and
Tanzania.
WHY: The need for wheelchairs in developing countries is still
largely unknown in the United States. Most people just
can't believe more than 100 million people have no choice
but to crawl on the ground. When people hear about it, they
want to help, especially when they realize that $50 can
change someone's life for years to come.
WHO: Don Schoendorfer, founder of Free Wheelchair Mission and
2008 recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor
Society's Above and Beyond award.
