Bloodshed in Sudan
NEW YORK, April 1, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- mtvU (http://www.mtvu.com/), MTV's
Emmy-winning college network, in partnership with STAND (www.StandNow.org), a
Student Anti-Genocide Coalition, today announced Turn it Up: a month of
exclusive album leaks and video premieres on mtvU.com, and call to action on
one of the world's most pressing humanitarian crises. Starting today, and
running through early May, more than a dozen groundbreaking artists --
including Tapes 'n Tapes, Dizzee Rascal, Tokyo Police Club and Santogold --
will exclusively "pre-release" new albums on mtvU.com, with several more
exclusively premiering new videos on the site. Adjacent to the new music will
be simple ways for college students to support STAND's efforts, which call on
President Bush to take bold and immediate action to protect the people of
Darfur during his last year in office, as well as petition their local
congresspersons, via the ENOUGH Project, to do more to end the genocide.
Every Turn it Up album will be available free, in its entirety, on
mtvU.com for a full week before its official release date. The list of
participating artists and featured albums includes:

mtvU.com as part of Turn it Up will include Tokyo Police Club, The Long
Blondes, Mickey Facts, Kidz in the Hall and Blue Scholars.
"Turn it Up marries the power of great music with college students'
activist spirit to help drive positive change in a region that urgently needs
it," said Stephen Friedman, GM, mtvU. "We're proud to join with STAND, the
ENOUGH project and many of the hottest acts on the college music scene for a
special month of 'turning it up' -- both the volume and pressure to act now."
The leak of Emmanuel Jal's "Warchild" represents a particularly apt close
to mtvU's month-long Turn it Up campaign. Jal was forced into the Sudan
People's Liberation Army at age seven, fighting in Sudan's bloody civil war
for nearly five years. He was eventually smuggled to Kenya, where he
established himself as one of the country's most popular rappers, delivering a
message of hope and peace. His new album will be released worldwide on May
13th.
Turn it Up is an extension of mtvU's nearly four-year long, student-
driven, Emmy-winning Sudan campaign. Other elements of the campaign have
included "Darfur is Dying," (http://www.darfurisdying.com/) a
student-developed online viral videogame -- now played more than 3 million
times -- offering a window into the Darfurian experience, as well as several
ways to take action and help the region's people. The game is part of mtvU's
comprehensive Sudan resource center on mtvU.com, an online hub with background
on the genocide, information on relief organizations, ways to get involved,
profiles of students making a difference and much more. mtvU's Sudan campaign
has been recognized with the 2006 Governors Emmy Award -- the highest honor
given by the Academy - as well as the Academy's 2006 Community Service Emmy
Award, a Banff award and six Beacon Awards, cable television's highest awards
for public affairs excellence.
About STAND
With more than 700 chapters at schools around the globe, STAND is the
fastest-growing student anti-genocide coalition in the world today. STAND
chapters actively organize to prevent and stop genocide wherever and whenever
it may occur. As the student division of the Genocide Intervention Network,
STAND's long-term goal is to establish a permanent anti-genocide constituency
that holds elected officials accountable for doing all that they can to
prevent and end genocide.
STAND, formerly known as "Students Taking Action Now: Darfur," formed in
2004 in response to the atrocities taking place in Darfur. Currently, STAND's
campaigns focus primarily on ending the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan. In
addition, STAND actively encourages members to learn about other conflicts and
the larger anti-genocide movement.
About the ENOUGH Project
ENOUGH is a project of the Center for American Progress to end genocide
and crimes against humanity. With an initial focus on the crises in Sudan,
Chad, eastern Congo, and northern Uganda, ENOUGH's strategy papers and
briefings provide sharp field analysis and targeted policy recommendations
based on a "3P" crisis response strategy: promoting durable peace, providing
civilian protection, and punishing perpetrators of atrocities. ENOUGH works
with concerned citizens, advocates, and policy makers to prevent, mitigate,
and resolve these crises. To learn more about ENOUGH and what you can do to
help, go to www.enoughproject.org.
