Novan Solar System Installed at Denver's The Gathering Place
DENVER--(Business Wire)-- A commercial solar water heating system has been installed by Novan Solar, Inc. at The Gathering Place, Denver's only daytime drop-in center for women and children who are experiencing poverty or homelessness. The system was chosen because of the high-efficiency and short payback compared to other renewable options such as photovoltaic or geothermal. The Novan system was part of a $5.7 million, 35,000 square foot renovation project made possible by private charitable donations and grants. Efforts were made to make the new building as energy efficient as possible. Money for the solar system itself was generously provided by a grant from the Gates Foundation. "Novan greatly appreciates the Gates Foundation's support of solar energy," stated President and CEO Jacob Futro. "It's great to see such an influential organization support our vision for a new paradigm in energy and sustainability." The system will produce almost 3,000 therms of energy (equivalent to 90 MWh) yearly and provides most of the building's domestic hot water needs. Over 20 metric tons of carbon dioxide (green house gases) will be offset annually. The Gathering Place offers women and children living on the streets of Denver a safe daytime refuge, resources for self-sufficiency, and opportunities to acquire new skills. The center's emergency services afford immediate relief to women and children in distress. Once women and children have had their most pressing needs met - like sustenance and shelter - they can take the next steps toward rebuilding their lives. The Gathering Place enables real, positive life changes for disadvantaged women and their children interested in bettering themselves. "The solar system will reduce our operating costs and free up more money for other essentials like food, bus tokens, telephones, and high-speed internet service," says Leslie Foster, President and CEO. "Plus, we think it is a great marriage of concepts since one of our overarching goals is to promote sustainability." Novan Solar Inc., based in Golden, Colo., is the largest solar thermal company in the Southwest. Novan specializes in turnkey solutions for large-scale commercial and industrial water heating needs in addition to supplying systems for residences. Novan Solar Inc.
