Award Involves Two of Houston's Most Distinguished Leaders

HOUSTON, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Harris County Hospital District
Foundation honored former Mayor Bob Lanier, one of Houston's most respected
and beloved citizens, with the Ben Taub Humanitarian Award during ceremonies
on Wednesday, October 21st.

"Bob Lanier exemplifies the values by which Ben Taub lived his life," said
Henry J.N. Taub II, Foundation board member. "Like Ben Taub, Bob Lanier has a
heart as big as the great State of Texas and a dogged determination to make
sure that every Texan is treated with fairness and compassion and has the
opportunity to succeed."

"Mayor Bob has the same empathy and compassion for his fellow man as my great
uncle," said H. Ben Taub, Foundation chairman. "I cannot think of a better
person to receive the Ben Taub Humanitarian Award."

Mr. Lanier joins a short list of Houstonians who have been honored with the
award including: Ginni and Richard Mithoff; Michael E. DeBakey, M.D.; J. Evans
Attwell; Ned. S. Holmes and Ben F. Love.

Bob Lanier was one of the most popular mayors in Houston's history. Texas
Monthly magazine named him one of the top three Texas Mayors of the 20th
Century. Mayor Lanier has served as the Chairman of the Texas Highway
Department and the Chairman of Houston Metro. He also chaired the non-profit
entity that built the convention center hotel. Bob managed to accomplish all
this and more while having a successful career as an attorney, real estate
developer and banker.

"This award is designed both to honor the hard work and commitment of the
recipient and to encourage others to take up the many challenges that still
face our community," said Henry J.N. Taub II. "As Albert Einstein once said,
'only a life lived for others is worth living.' There is much work to be done
and the Foundation is encouraging others to continue the example set by Mayor
Lanier and my great uncle."

Mayor Lanier and his wife Elyse live in Houston, as do their seven children
and 11 grandchildren.
