NAACP, Teamsters Call on MLB to Help End Discrimination at New Era Cap
Teamsters President Hoffa Joins NAACP Chair Julian Bond for Release of NAACP Report on Racial Discrimination, Worker Abuse by MLB's Cap Manufacturer NAACP Chairman Julian Bond and Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa will hold a press conference Monday to call on Major League Baseball (MLB) to intervene with New Era Cap to end discrimination and worker rights violations in the company's Mobile, Alabama distribution center. New Era Cap is the MLB's exclusive on-field cap manufacturer and licensor. At the press conference, the NAACP will release its report of an investigation it recently undertook at the request of workers at New Era's Mobile facility. The report includes firsthand worker stories of racial discrimination and abusive conditions at the plant. It details a lack of promotion of experienced black workers; poverty-level wages with significant differences in pay between black and white workers; and a fierce, retaliatory anti-union campaign, in the course of which more than 20 workers were terminated. Titled "Racial Discrimination, Repression and Retaliation at New Era Cap," the report recommends actions New Era should take to address the racial discrimination and worker intimidation revealed in the report. Reporters outside the Washington, DC metro area can call into the press conference. A question and answer session will follow the speaking program.
