American Water`s John Young Elected 2010 Chairman of Design-Build Institute of America

VOORHEES, N.J.--(Business Wire)--
American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE:AWK), the largest investor-owned U.S.
water and wastewater utility company, announced today that John Young, President
of American Water Services and American Water Works Service Company, has been
elected to serve as Chairman of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) for
2010. Young has been a DBIA board member for five years, most recently as
Treasurer. This year, he also chaired the organization`s strategic planning task
force. The gavel will be passed to Young at the Institute`s annual Design-Build
Conference and Expo in Washington, D.C., on November 7, 2009. 

Young was instrumental in galvanizing support behind a new DBIA mission, vision,
and strategy. Approved by the board at the 2009 annual conference, that mission
reinforces DBIA`s commitment to design-build project delivery and to teaching
the effective integration of design and construction services. 

Young began his career with American Water in 1977 and has held a variety of
executive positions, including chief operating officer, vice president of
Operations and Investment Performance, and vice president of Engineering. He was
appointed to his current position in September 2008. 

In addition to DBIA, Young is an active member of several other professional
organizations. He is a member of the board of American Water Works Association
and belongs to the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has also served on
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency`s (EPA) National Drinking Water
Advisory Council and several EPA working groups. 

A registered professional engineer in a number of states, Mr. Young holds a
bachelor`s degree in civil engineering from Duke University, and a master`s
degree in environmental engineering from the University of North Carolina.
