Anniversary of 'A Nation at Risk' Education Report Highlights Urgent Need for
Action, Accountability

BALTIMORE, April 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In recognition of the 25th
anniversary of "A Nation at Risk," Richard E. Bavaria, Ph.D., senior vice
president for education outreach for Sylvan Learning, has issued the following
statement:

"Today marks the 25th anniversary of the U.S. Department of Education's
National Commission on Excellence in Education's report, "A Nation at Risk."
This prominent report called for change in our nation's educational system in
1983.

"This anniversary should stand as a reminder to all American schools,
teachers, parents and students. There are still concerns in the U.S. public
education system despite the government's attempt at educational reform with
programs like No Child Left Behind. After the report release, there was much
discussion about the goals of schools, the roles of parents, and the
responsibilities of teachers and even students. These issues continue to be
addressed today -- 25 years later. There needs to be a continued interest in
the teaching, and the resulting learning, of content and skills. Today should
remind us of the importance of accountability in our school systems with
administrators, teachers and students working together.

"This report was a call to action to our country's elected officials, teachers
and parents. Our children have to possess the skills required to be
successful in this ever-changing global economy. If the past 25 years have
taught us anything, it is the speed at which knowledge increases and changes.
American students need the content and skills to be ready to face these new
and increasing challenges," Dr. Bavaria said.

Richard E. Bavaria, Ph.D, has nearly forty years of education experience, in
both the public and private sectors, including classroom teaching, district
administration and more than a decade with Sylvan Learning partnering with
teachers for the success of students throughout North America.

Dr. Bavaria is available to speak to the media about "A Nation at Risk" on the
topics related to public, private and supplemental education.
