SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16: BOSTON TEA PARTY

Profile America Sunday, December 16th. One of the most effective protest
demonstrations ever staged took place on this date in 1773 - the Boston Tea
Party. Some 50 members of a group called "the sons of liberty," boarded three
ships in Boston Harbor and dumped nearly 350 crates of valuable tea to protest
British tax policies. Britain responded by closing the port of Boston and
sending a new governor - backed by four regiments of troops. These moves only
hardened the position of the colonists wishing for independence. Tea is no
longer the expensive and dominant drink of choice that it once was in the U.S.
Now, Americans drink an average of just over seven gallons of tea a year,
