U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for July 11
WASHINGTON, July 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S. Census Bureau: (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090226/CENSUSLOGO) SATURDAY, JULY 11: BABE RUTH'S FIRST BASEBALL GAME Profile America -- Saturday, July 11th. One of the great figures of baseball played in his first major league game on this date in 1914 -- George Herman Ruth, known around the world as "Babe" Ruth. In that game, Ruth pitched for the Boston Red Sox against Cleveland. While relieved for the last two innings, Ruth got credit for the 4-to-3 win. As every young baseball fan learns, Ruth proved to be more valuable as an everyday hitter than he was as a pitcher, and Boston unwisely sold him to the New York Yankees, where he became a legend. The year that Babe Ruth joined the major leagues, 4.6 million fans went to major league games. Today, that figure is nearly 81 million.
