OKI Unveils Small and Low Power Consumption 10G MZ Modulator Driver IC for Optical Communication
Aiming to gain market share with strengths in small size and low
power consumption
TOKYO--(Business Wire)--
Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TOKYO:6703) today announced it
has developed a 10Gbps differential outputs type driver IC (KGL4186KD)
for Mach-Zehnder (MZ) modulator for optical communication. The
KGL4186KD achieves a power consumption of 0.9W (at the output swing of
6.4Vpp), one of the lowest of its kind, and is assembled in a small
ceramic package that is advantageous for high frequency
characteristics. Samples are available starting today.
"We are pleased to present our driver IC which has the lowest
power consumption in its class. The size of 10Gbps transceivers for
long distance optical communication are becoming smaller, as seen in
300pin SFF MSA. To solve the heating problem critical in such a small
size module, demand for lower power consumption is increasing for all
the electrical and optical components in transceiver modules, such as
driver IC as well as modulators," said Masayuki Tsuboi, President of
Optical Components Company at Oki Electric Industry. "Leveraging its
high-speed, high output device technology, OKI plans to gain market
share in the 10Gbps optical communication market with the MZ driver IC
series."
The KGL4186KD is a MZ modulator driver IC with differential
outputs operating under the positive supply voltage. Differential
output amplitude varies from 3Vpp to over 6.4V. KGL4186KD, based on
the well-established OKI GaAs PHEMT technology, offers a high-quality
waveform. Also, by the design optimization for the output circuit,
which is a key for the power consumption, OKI achieves the lowest
class power consumption of 0.9W at differential output amplitude of
6.4V pp. In addition, the 4mm square ceramic package provides a small
footprint as well as a high-quality waveform at high frequency.
KGL4186KD enables all the customers to take a dual drive type MZ
modulator or single-ended (low voltage) drive type MZ modulator, which
are based on LiNbO3 (Lithium niobate) or InP (indium phosphide), into
their design for 10Gbps transceivers of a small form factor with high
performance and low power consumption.
OKI will showcase its 10Gbps modulator driver IC for optical
communication at its booth at the Optical Fiber Communication
Conference & Exposition and the National Fiber Optic Engineers
Conference (OFC/NFOEC2008) (http://www.ofcnfoec.org/) (Booth No.
2415).
(Major characteristics)
1. 11.3Gbps operation
2. Oscillation over 6.4Vpp (3.2Vpp for each port)
3. Power consumption 0.9W standard
4. 4x4mm 24Pin QFN Package
