Government of Canada Supports Goose Bay Economy Through Environmental Clean-Up Project
HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR, Jul
12 (MARKET WIRE) --
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister
for the Atlantic Gateway, announced $300-million in funding today for the
5 Wing Goose Bay Remediation Project. This funding demonstrates the
Government's commitment to environmental clean-up, and to generating
economic opportunities for the local economy.
"This project allows the Department of National Defence to address
contamination at 5 Wing Goose Bay and reduce potential risks," said
Minister MacKay. "This significant investment benefits the Wing,
contributes to the economic foundation of the community and mitigates
risk to human health and the environment."
With this project, the Government will examine all of the contaminated
sites at the Wing to understand the environmental challenges and then
proceed with efforts to remediate the sites, manage risk to human health
and protect the environment.
The Goose Bay Remediation Project will deliver important economic
benefits to the region's economy now and in future years as the project
gets fully underway. For example, as part of the $300-million in funding,
a $4.5-million contract was recently awarded to AMEC, a large,
multidisciplinary environment service firm with a local office in Happy
Valley-Goose Bay that employs four full-time project staff who will
provide consulting services to DND.
Project work involves assessments to confirm the extent of contamination,
followed by appropriate remedial action, such as removal of free-phase
fuel product from the subsurface, treatment or risk management of
contaminated soil and groundwater, and removal of waste material. This
work will be implemented in phases.
All the work will be competitively tendered through Defence Construction
Canada or Public Works and Government Services Canada on behalf of DND,
following standard Government of Canada contracting policies.
The Goose Bay Remediation Project is funded by the Federal Contaminated
Sites Action Plan, which is coordinated by Environment Canada and the
Treasury Board Secretariat to provide funding to assess and remediate
federal contaminated sites. The project is anticipated to be completed by
2020.
Since the Second World War, 5 Wing Goose Bay has had a continuous
international military presence, which has resulted in significant
socio-economic benefits and stability for the surrounding communities. To
this day, the Wing continues to support a foreign military training
program.
