Interventional Pain Management Experts Available to Discuss Prescription Drug
Abuse
Recent prescription medication reports regarding Michael Jackson and the FDA's
recommendation to ban Vicodin and Percocet show that prescription drug abuse
is reaching epidemic proportions. Interventional Pain Management Physicians
from the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) are
experts in the field and are available in every state to comment on the latest
news and why there is so much abuse in this field - including doctor shopping,
wrong usage and improperly trained physicians.
ASIPP has been successfully lobbying for nationwide prescription drug
monitoring (there are 39 out of 50 states monitoring or planning to monitor as
a result). In 2005, ASIPP helped pass the National All Schedules Prescription
Electronic Reporting (NASPER) Act to coordinate nationwide monitoring of
prescription drugs including sharing of information across state lines.
ASIPP spokespeople are available in each state to comment on a number of key
prescription drug abuse issues including:
-- New FDA recommendations for pain pill bans - ASIPP does not agree as
this decision does not address the underlying problem
-- Growing number of poorly trained/ non-credentialed doctors prescribing
pain medications
-- Michael Jackson, "doctor shopping" and the effects of the
prescription drugs he supposedly was abusing
-- What pills NEVER mix together
-- Impact of abuse on Medicaid/Medicare deficits; great example of health
care system waste
-- Many states are concerned about privacy. States, such as Florida,
known
for high abuse, decide not to share information across state lines -
ASIPP says that is short-sighted
