4 Burr Oaks Families Sue Corporations with Ties to Cemetery
"The buck must not stop with the four employees who were arrested. We want to know what the investors and officers in the parent corporation knew about this." CHICAGO, July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dinizulu Law Group, Ltd., has filed a complaint in Cook County Circuit Court on behalf of four families over the possible desecration of grave sites belonging to some 32 relatives buried at BurrOaksCemetery in Alsip. Cook County Sheriff's detectives have discovered a pile of bones from 200 to 300 decomposed bodies in an overgrown, fenced-off section of the cemetery. BurrOaksCemetery is the final resting place of notable African Americans like Emmitt Till, Dinah Washington and Negro League Baseball players. This week, four BurrOaksCemetery workers were charged with dismembering a human body, a Class X Felony. The lawsuit filed Friday names three corporations with ties to the cemetery: Perpetua Inc., Perpetua Burr Oaks Holding Co.; and Perpetua Holdings Illinois. "We want to make sure the investigators don't put all the blame on the four employees who were arrested. The buck must not stop with them. We want to know what the investors and officers of the parent companies knew about this," Dinizulu said. On Saturday, Dinizulu went to the cemetery with concerned families searching for answers but learned the cemetery has been declared a crime scene by police and closed to the public. Each of the four families in the suit has more than one relative buried at Burr Oaks. Before the site was closed, one plaintiff walked the entire cemetery without any sign of the gravesites of her mother and young son. "She was present when her loved ones were buried. She'd been to the gravesites before. Literally, there was no grave in that spot. No marker. Gone," Dinizulu said. "Honestly, these people are angry but they're shell shocked. They are furious and numb at the same time. They are broken-hearted. They are feeling like they've been victimized and their loved ones have been victimized." The families are seeking unspecified damages. Attorney Dinizulu and plaintiffs are available to speak with members of the media. www.dinizululawgroup.com. SOURCE Dinizulu Law Group, Ltd. T.
