Government of Canada Assists With 2007 Flood Costs in Yukon
WHITEHORSE, YUKON, Jul 11 (MARKET WIRE) --
The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, joined the
Honourable Archie Lang, Minister of Community Services, to announce the
Government of Canada's interim payment to Yukon under the Disaster
Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA). The money will assist with
costs incurred as a result of extensive flooding in the territory in the
spring and summer of 2007.
"I am pleased to announce this payment of $500,000 toward response and
recovery costs incurred by Yukon as a result of floods in the Southern
Lakes region in 2007," said Minister Van Loan. "Our government is
dedicated to working collaboratively with the provinces and territories
to ensure that communities can make a full recovery after natural
disasters strike."
"I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Yukon government employees,
the residents and all the volunteers who helped the community
tremendously by filling sand bags, building sandbag dikes, and supporting
their neighbours," said Minister Lang. "By working together we can all
make a difference when faced with natural disasters."
During the spring and summer of 2007, the Southern Lakes region of Yukon
experienced extensive flooding, resulting in damages to private property
and public infrastructure, including road washouts and threats to water
services. Record level water in the lake system, high snow packs and
above normal temperatures led to flooding that affected the communities
of Marsh Lake, Tagish, Carcross and Lake Laberge and required the
evacuation of some residents.
Additional DFAA payments for the 2007 flood will be made at the request
of the territory as further eligible expenditures are approved.
