Pew Hails Compromise on Fuel Efficiency as a Landmark Victory for all Americans
WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Phyllis Cuttino, director of
the Pew Charitable Trusts Campaign for Fuel Efficiency issued the following
statement welcoming the compromise between Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Chairman
John Dingell (D-Mich.) for a meaningful increase in fuel efficiency standards
to 35 miles per gallon by 2020:
"This is a truly historic agreement, breaking a 30-year Congressional
deadlock on mileage standards.
"There are still some major issues to be worked out in other parts of the
energy bill, so this is not a slam-dunk.
"If the House and Senate finally approve this deal and the President signs
it, they will all have done more for consumers at the pump than any Congress
or Administration since the 1970's.
"Senators and representatives will return to Washington next week after
spending two weeks at home with very angry constituents who are facing record
high gas prices. They are hearing a simple message: do something.
"It will not be a very merry Christmas for members of Congress if they go
back to their states and districts with no answer to the question: what have
you done for me at the gas pump lately?"
