Elekta operates within two business areas, oncology and neurosurgery. The
company's main business is oncology, sales of which increased by 16% to SKr 2.2
billion in 2005. Elekta claims to be the world's second-largest supplier of
oncology products after Varian Medical Systems. It offers linear accelerators,
simulators, stereotactic radiotherapy equipment, 3D dose planning systems and
products for intensity-modulated radiation treatment. In April 2005, Elekta
acquired Impac Medical Systems, enabling Elekta to also offer a range of medical
IT systems for use in cancer care, including integrated solutions centred on
image-enabled electronic medical records covering the cancer treatment process. 

Elekta claims to be the market leader for devices for the radiosurgical
treatment of brain disorders as a result of its Leksell Gamma Knife technology.
The company's neurosurgery products also include the magnetoencephalography
devices gained through the 2003 acquisition of Neuromag. In 2005, neurosurgery
sales declined by 5% to SKr 977 million.
