CHICAGO Aug 11 Cargill Inc [CARG.UL] said it will not slaughter hogs at its Ottumwa, Iowa, pork plant on Thursday as a precaution to prevent wastewater from overflowing retention ponds that have been filled by recent rainstorms.
Heavy rain and area flooding have not damaged the plant, said Cargill spokesman Mike Martin. The plant will process pork on Thursday.
The plant can slaughter up to 18,500 hogs a day and some of that production may be shifted to the company's Beardstown, Illinois, plant or made up by operating Ottumwa on the weekend, he said. (Reporting by Bob Burgdorfer)
