Shares of Game Group (GMG.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) surged 228 pence on Friday, their highest level this year, after the Competition Commission provisionally cleared the video game retailer's acquisition of rival Game Station. Game group is fighting to stay ahead of competition from supermarkets, web retailers and independent stores. It gives its trading statement on Tuesday.

ANGER OVER AFRICAN DESIGNS

The clothing designer Matthew Williamson has become embroiled in controversy after two outfits based on traditional Ethiopian dresses in his latest collection prompted the Ethiopian government to investigate how to protect its national costume from his attention. Oxfam, which backed Ethiopia in its battle to trademark its coffee beans in a recently settled dispute with Starbucks, is investigating the matter along with the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
