French customs seize fake Gucci perfumes

PARIS, Nov 27 (Reuters) - French customs seized 25,000 bottles of fake Gucci perfume worth around 1.5 million euros ($2.23 million), French Budget Minister Eric Woerth said in a statement on Tuesday. The counterfeit goods, uncovered on Oct. 25, were found in the port of Marseille in a container that had arrived from Algeria, the statement said.

France has some of the world's toughest anti-counterfeiting laws to protect its luxury goods industry. Its customs authorities seized 6 million fake goods in 2006.

Gucci scents are made by Procter & Gamble (PG.N) under licence from Gucci, which is in turn owned by French retailer PPR (PRTP.PA). (Reporting by Nick Antonovics, editing by Will Waterman)
