DETROIT, June 18 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers union named veteran auto analyst and union advisor Steve Girsky to the board of General Motors Corp GMGMQ.PK.

Girsky will represent the GM retiree healthcare trust fund, dubbed Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association (VEBA), on the board.

The trust, which will own 17.5 percent of the automaker when it exits bankruptcy, has the right to select one GM director.

Girsky was also a former advisor to ousted GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner and has worked as an auto analyst with Morgan Stanley.

GM recently said that former AT&T Inc (T.N) CEO Ed Whitacre will become chairman of the reorganized automaker when it emerges from bankruptcy.

GM, which filed for bankruptcy on June 1, plans a quick sale process that would allow a much smaller automaker to emerge from court protection in as little as 60 days under the majority ownership of the U.S. Treasury.
