MELBOURNE, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Woolworths Ltd (WOW.AX), Australia's largest supermarket chain, said sales at its Big W discount chain and home electronics division have begun the second quarter very positively.

"People are out there still spending," Chief Executive Michael Luscombe told a briefing.

Woolworths earlier posted a 9.6 percent increase in first-quarter sales to Oct 5, as food and liquor sales withstood generally slower consumer demand. ($1=A$1.42) (Reporting by Victoria Thieberger)
