UPDATE 2-Husky says White Rose production halted by ice
(Adds that other fields unaffected by ice conditions)
CALGARY, Alberta, April 2 (Reuters) - Husky Energy Inc (HSE.TO) said on Wednesday that ice conditions have forced it to suspend oil production at its 140,000 barrel per day White Rose oil field in the North Atlantic off Newfoundland.
Husky spokesman Graham White said the company halted production on Tuesday when a massive ice floe moved within a few miles of the White Rose field.
"Depending on what happens with the wind, the ice could encroach closer to the position of White Rose," White said.
He was unable to say when operations were expected to resume.
The White Rose field uses a ship to pump and store oil from the field, which lies 350 km (217 miles) southeast of St. John's, Newfoundland.
Nearby operations have not yet been affected by the ice. However a spokesman for the Hibernia project, the largest oil producer in the Jeanne d'Arc basin, said they were monitoring the situation closely.
Petro-Canada (PCA.TO), which operates the 150,000 barrel a day Terra Nova field, said the ice was still 20 nautical miles (37 km, 23 miles) east of its operations.
"We haven't been impacted," said John Downton, a spokesman for the company. "It's not a problem at the moment and our operations are not affected. "
Petro-Canada also owns a 27.5 percent stake in the White Rose field.
Shares in Husky, majority controlled by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing, rose 51 Canadian cents to C$40.82 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Wednesday.
