UPDATE 1-Australian oil firms resume output after cyclone

SYDNEY, Feb 22 (Reuters) - BHP Billiton Ltd (BHP.AX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz)(BLT.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Woodside Petroleum Ltd (WPL.AX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Friday they have resumed production at two of Australia's largest oil fields off Western Australia after a cyclone threat passed.

A spokeswoman from BHP, Australia's largest oil and gas producer, said production at its 80,000 barrel per day (bpd) Stybarrow field resumed on Thursday and it hopes to reconnect its 8,000 bpd Griffin field later on Friday.

Woodside Petroleum said in an e-mailed statement it has resumed production at its 74,000 barrels per day (bpd) Cossack-Pioneer field, but its 30,000 bpd Enfield oil field was still shut in.

AED Oil Ltd (AED.AX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), which suspended its 6,000-10,000 bpd Puffin oil field in the Timor Sea on Feb. 13, said it expects to resume production over the weekend.

Tropical Cyclone Nicholas, now a category four cyclone, had forced five oil and gas operators operating off Australia's northwest coast to suspend output totalling at least 220,000 barrels per day -- about 40 percent of the country's production.

Chevron Corp (CVX.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) resumed production at its oil fields off northwest Australia earlier this week. The fields have a total output of 9,000 bpd. (Reporting by Fayen Wong)
