PHILADELPHIA, July 24 (Reuters) - Midstream energy company SemGroup Energy Partners SGLP.O said on Thursday the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was conducting an inquiry into the partnership regarding its disclosure of its parent company's financial problems.

The parent of SemGroup Energy Partners filed for bankruptcy on Tuesday. Two hedge funds have assumed voting control of the general partnership of SemGroup Energy Partners, which is not part of the parent company's bankruptcy filing.

The SEC requested that SemGroup Energy Partners preserve and provide certain documents and information about its disclosure of its parent's financial problems. SemGroup Energy Partners said it has retained counsel and intends to cooperate fully with the SEC's inquiry.
