TOKYO, Sept 9 (Reuters) - The broad-based Topix index fell 2.2 percent on Tuesday, a day after the U.S. government's bailout of top mortgage firms sparked a broad market rally, with bank shares sliding amid continued uncertainty over the global economy.

As of 0342 GMT, the Topix had shed 26.15 points to 1,190.26.

The benchmark Nikkei average .N225 lost 1.8 percent to 12,394.57. (Reporting by Aiko Hayashi)
