PARIS, Jan 10 (Reuters) - France and Spain have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to revive a long-standing project that will almost double the electricity flow between the two countries and boost energy supply security.

The 1,200-megawatts power line will bring total capacity to flow electricity in either direction to 2,600 megawatts.

"A memorandum of understanding between (French grid) RTE and (Spanish grid) REE for the development of an interconnection between Spain and France passing by the east of the Pyrenees will be signed," said a joint statement.

French and Spanish ecologists have battled against the project for the past 15 years, leading the French government to cancel the plan altogether in 1997. (Reporting by Muriel Boselli)
