Hynix Semiconductor Inc (000660.KS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), the world's second-biggest maker of memory chips, surged 4.94 percent to 27,600 won after a media report that Japanese rival Elpida Memory Inc (6665.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) planned to raise computer memory chip prices.

Analysts said the report boosted hopes for an imminent recovery in the long-suffering dynamic random access memory (DRAM) market, although they questioned whether Elpida and other chip makers have the power to raise prices by the steep margin they want.

"The DRAM market is still weak and suppliers don't have much say on pricing," said Kim Young-june, an analyst at Kyobo Securities.

"But people agree that this is the bottom for DRAM," he said, adding a price recovery is likely to take place in May.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) also rose, gaining 1.96 percent to 625,000 won.   Continued...
