 TOKYO, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Japan's 10 utilities generated 4.9
percent more electricity in January than they did a year earlier,
marking an all-time high for the month, industry data showed on
Friday.
The utilities generated 90.42 billion kilowatt-hours of
electricity in January, topping the previous record high for
January of 87.84 billion kilowatt-hours recorded in 2006, the
Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan said.
The increase in electricity generation came as almost all of
Japan faced cold winter temperatures for the month, the
association said.
In December, electricity generation totalled 87.13 billion
kilowatt-hours, up 1.7 percent from the same month a year
earlier, according to the preliminary data.
As reported earlier, the usage rate at Japan's 10 nuclear
power generators rose to an average 60.7 percent in January, up
from 58.9 percent in December. [ID:nT249113]
Japan has 55 nuclear power generators for commercial use,
with total generating capacity of 49,470 megawatts, the world's
third-largest output.
Japan derives about 30 percent of its electricity from
nuclear power plants.
